Steel City Selects is the Pittsburgh area’s premier Tier II, all-female, ice hockey organization. Our teams routinely rank in the top-10 Tier II teams in the country. Our National-bound 19U, 16U and 14U teams compete against top Tier II and lower-level Tier I teams from across the U.S. and Canada. SCS is looking for players who can compete at a high level and wish to take their hockey skills to the next level. We have built a program that requires a full commitment to every practice, training session and game from all of our coaches and players. Each team will play a 40-50 game schedule.
New this year: 12U Team
We are hoping to field a 12U Steel City Selects team for the 2017-2018 season. Our plan for the 12U team is that they would play in approximately four tournaments (three in the Pittsburgh area) and host a few teams for non-tournament games, for a total of 20-25 games. The 12U team would practice approximately once a week, on Saturday or Sunday, in the late afternoon at Shadyside Academy. This team is for players in the 2005 and 2006 birth years.
We still have a few roster spots on our new 12U team.
If you are interested in trying out for the 12U team, please send an email to email@example.com.
SCS is a full-time team. Our players are expected to participate in weekly practices, conditioning sessions and all games. SCS’s goal is to develop our players to compete at a higher level so that they can reach their goals, whether that is playing Tier I or playing in college. With our commitment to player development, we in-turn ask each player and family fully understand the time and money commitment that is associated with this level of hockey and ask that you take serious consideration before a decision is made to play on multiple teams. We are aware of the stress on both players and parents when a player over-commits and it’s not fair to the teams, parents and most importantly, the player.
There will be one regularly scheduled weekday practice at Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale on Tuesdays each week. This practice will consist of off-ice conditioning at Finish First Sports Performance inside Baierl Ice Complex, combined with an on-ice practice. Regular classroom development will also be held at Baierl Ice Complex during weekday sessions.
In addition, regularly scheduled Thursday evening practices, and Saturday and Sunday morning or afternoon practices will be held at Shadyside Academy in Fox Chapel. Typically, if games are played on Saturdays or Sundays, no practice is held on those days.
Steel City Selects maintains our own independent schedule rather than as a member of a set league. This allows us to participate in the most competitive tournaments in North America (both U.S. and Canada) as well as three or four “host weekends”, where invited teams come to Pittsburgh to compete. In the past, we have traveled to the Ignite the Ice tournament in Cleveland and the Bauer World Invitational in Detroit, among others. We also annually participate in the local Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Girls Thanksgiving tournament. Additionally, we host a very competitive Tier II tournament over President’s Day Weekend with 24 teams across age levels. All families are required to participate in the duties of hosting this big event.
The season fee for the full-time 14U, 16U, 19U teams is $2,200. If desired, fees can be paid via five payments across the season. Game uniforms and warm-ups are an additional cost, but all tournaments, training, ice costs and coaching fees are included in the season fee.
There will be a summer mini-camp for all players selected for SCS 2017-2018 teams. The camp is scheduled for Saturday/Sunday July 15-16th at Baierl Ice Complex and will consist of on-ice and off-ice sessions, nutrition guidance, and a fitness test for all players. The cost of this camp is included in the 2017-2018 season fees.
The coaches for the 2017-2018 have been announced. All the information is available here.
When registering for tryouts, you will also have the opportunity to express your interest in two SCS summer opportunities. If you are interested in either one, please indicate as such on the registration form and you will be contacted with more details, as appropriate.
SCS will be creating a mixed age summer team. This team will have practices and will compete in at least one tournament. Practices and schedule will be set once we determine if we have enough players to create a team. Any player who expresses an interest in playing on this team will be evaluated at tryouts and will be notified if selected for this team.
SCS has been given a wonderful opportunity from HTI (Hockey Training Institute). Each year they send a team to the Beantown Classic Tournament in Boston (http://beantownclassic.com/events/womens-classic/) at the end of July. HTI will be adding 6-8 SCS players to their team this year. This tournament is highly scouted and is excellent exposure for players hoping to play in college. If you are interested in being considered for this team, you will need to indicate as such when you register for tryouts. There is a separate fee and camp for participating on this team; however we have negotiated a discounted rate for all SCS players who are selected.
