2019-2020 Season Tryouts

Steel City Selects is the Pittsburgh area’s premier Tier II, all-female, ice hockey organization.  Our teams routinely rank in the top-20 Tier II teams in the country. Our National-bound 19U, 16U and 14U teams compete against top Tier II and lower-level Tier I teams from across the U.S. and Canada.  SCS is looking for players who can compete at a high level and wish to take their hockey skills to the next level. We have built a program that requires a full commitment to every practice, training session and game from all of our coaches and players.  The 14U, 16U and 19U teams will play a 40-50 game schedule.   The 10U and 12U teams will play a 20-25 game schedule, primarily at tournaments.

NEW THIS YEAR: Due to many requests from area families, SCS is adding a 10U team to provide younger girls the opportunity to develop their skills using the SCS model.  We are excited to expand the SCS family to this age group!

Commitment Level

SCS is a full-time team. Our players are expected to participate in weekly practices, conditioning sessions and all games. SCS’s goal is to develop our players to compete at a higher level so that they can reach their goals, whether that is playing Tier I or playing in college. With our commitment to player development, we in-turn ask each player and family fully understand the time and money commitment that is associated with this level of hockey and ask that you take serious consideration before a decision is made to play on multiple teams. We are aware of the stress on both players and parents when a player over-commits and it’s not fair to the teams, parents and most importantly, the player.

Practice (3 to 4 days per week for the majority of the season)

There will be one regularly scheduled weekday practice at Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale on Tuesdays each week. This practice will consist of off-ice conditioning at Finish First Sports Performance inside Baierl Ice Complex, combined with an on-ice practice. Regular classroom development will also be held at Baierl Ice Complex during weekday sessions.

In addition, regularly scheduled Thursday evening practices, and Saturday and Sunday morning or afternoon practices will be held at Shadyside Academy in Fox Chapel. Typically, if games are played on Saturdays or Sundays, no practice is held on those days.

Practices for the 2019-2020 season will begin in early August.

Steel City Selects maintains our own independent schedule rather than as a member of a set league. This allows us to participate in the most competitive tournaments in North America (both U.S. and Canada) as well as three or four “host weekends”, where invited teams come to Pittsburgh to compete. In the past, we have traveled to the Ignite the Ice tournament in Cleveland and the Bauer/CCM World Invitational in Detroit, among others. We also annually participate in the local Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Girls Thanksgiving tournament. Additionally, we host a very competitive Tier II tournament over President’s Day Weekend with 24 teams across age levels. All families are required to participate in the duties of hosting this big event.

Special Note About our 10U and 12U Teams

Players on the SCS 10U and 12U teams are encouraged to play on another team, boys or girls, to enhance their skill development. The 10U and 12U teams will play approximately 20 games during the season (primarily at four tournaments). Prior to each tournament there will be four clinic sessions focusing on skills development. Players must attend these sessions in order to play in the tournament.  In addition, there could be an occasional weeknight practice throughout the season .  We will provide a schedule of tournaments early in the season, in hopes that the girls can work with any other team they are on to schedule around the tournaments.

Season Fee

There will be no increase in fees for the the 2019-2020  season.  The season fee is $2200 for teams at the 14U, 16U and 19U level and $1400 for the 10U and 12U teams.  If desired, season fees can be paid via five payments across the season. Game uniforms and warm-ups are an additional cost, but all tournaments, training, ice costs and coaching fees are included in the season fee.

Summer Mini-Camp

There will be a summer mini-camp for all players selected for SCS 2019-2020 teams. The exact dates of the camp are not yet available, however it will occur during an August weekend at Baierl Ice Complex and will consist of on-ice and off-ice sessions, nutrition guidance, and a fitness test for all players. The cost of this camp is included in the 2019-2020 season fees.
