Steel City Selects is the Pittsburgh area’s premier Tier II, all-female, ice hockey organization. Our teams routinely rank in the top-20 Tier II teams in the country. Our National-bound 19U, 16U and 14U teams compete against top Tier II and lower-level Tier I teams from across the U.S. and Canada. SCS is looking for players who can compete at a high level and wish to take their hockey skills to the next level. We have built a program that requires a full commitment to every practice, training session and game from all of our coaches and players.
The 14U, 16U and 19U teams will play a 40-50 game schedule and will have a minimum of four ice touches per week -- either practices or games. The 12U team will play a 25-30 game schedule, primarily at tournaments, and will have will have a minimum of nine ice touches per month -- either practices or games.
SCS will not be fielding a 10U team for the 2020-2021 season.
Tryouts for all of our teams were held on June 27-28th. Our National-bound teams are full. However, we are still seeking a few players for our 12U team.
A supplemental tryout for interested 12U players will be held at 6:30 pm on Monday, August 17th at Baierl Ice Complex.
Players must complete the registration form via the link below in order to attend the supplemental try out session. There is no fee to attend the supplemental tryout.
If you have any questions about the 12U team or the supplemental tryouts, please send an email to email@example.com.
We hope to you see on August 17th!
SCS is a full-time team. Our players are expected to participate in weekly practices, conditioning sessions and all games. SCS’s goal is to develop our players to compete at a higher level so that they can reach their goals, whether that is playing Tier I or playing in college. With our commitment to player development, we in-turn ask each player and family fully understand the time and money commitment that is associated with this level of hockey and ask that you take serious consideration before a decision is made to play on multiple teams. We are aware of the stress on both players and parents when a player over-commits and it’s not fair to the teams, parents and most importantly, the player.
Please note: It is always our intention to represent the MidAm District at the USA Hockey National Championships. It was recently announced that the 2021 Nationals will be held in Irvine, CA. So there is the possibility that any or all of our National-bound teams would travel to California next April.
The 12U team is primarily tournament team. A majority of games will be played at four tournaments throughout the season, at least two of which will be in the Pittsburgh area. For the 2020-2021 season we are expanding the scope of the 12U to include nine monthly practices to improve skill development and team play. Because we recognize that 12U girls may wish to continue to skate with their coed team or local girls team, players have the option of playing on another team in addition to SCS. However, we expect the girls to commit to SCS and attend practices and games so the players can develop as a team. The goal of the 12U team is to develop girls so they can ultimately play for our National-bound Tier II teams if they wish. We ask that families closely consider whether committing to play for two teams is feasible and in the best interest of their daughters.
Practices for all teams will begin in early August.
There will be one regularly scheduled weekday practice at Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale on Tuesdays each week. Regular classroom/video sessions will also be held at Baierl Ice Complex during Tuesday sessions.
In addition, regularly scheduled Thursday evening practices will be held at Shady Side Academy in Fox Chapel and two weekend practices are held either in morning or afternoon at Shady Side Academy or Saturday evening at Baierl Ice Complex. Typically, if games are played on Saturdays or Sundays, no practice is held on those days.
The 12U team will practice routinely on Tuesday evenings at Baierl Ice Complex and Thursday evenings at Shady Side Academy in Fox Chapel. In addition, the team will practice one weekend day per month. This practice could be at either rink.
Steel City Selects maintains our own independent schedule rather than as a member of a set league. This allows us to participate in the most competitive tournaments and showcases in North America (both U.S. and Canada) as well as three or four “host weekends”, where invited teams come to Pittsburgh to compete. We will also travel to play other teams at their home rinks approximately three or four weekend per season. Additionally, we host a very competitive Tier II tournament each season with 24 teams across age levels. All families are required to participate in the duties of hosting this big event.
The 12U team is primarily a tournament team, in which a majority of its games will be played at tournaments throughout the season. The team will participate in four or five tournaments across the season, at least two of which will be in the Pittsburgh area. We are currently planning to attend the following tournaments:
In addition, to compliment our tournament schedule, we will look to schedule 2-4 games against a 12U team or teams from the region (i.e. Buffalo, Cleveland, etc.). In these instances, families would only need to spend one night in a hotel rather than a weekend away at a tournament. There will also be the opportunity to play an occasional home game against out-of-town teams who are in town to play other local teams.
The season fee is $2600 for teams at the 14U, 16U and 19U level and $2100 for the 12U team. If desired, season fees can be paid via five payments across the season. Game uniforms and warm-ups are an additional cost, but all tournaments, training, ice costs and coaching fees are included in the season fee. In addition, the mandatory $100 fundraising fee is included in the season fee, with the opportunity to recoup the fee by selling raffle tickets.
Steel City Selects participates in a program that offers families the opportunity to earn money towards their season fees by working at PNC Park for Pirate games and other events. We also participate in the Shop with Scripts program where families can earn money for fees by purchasing gift cards through Scripts that can be used for every day purchases. Each year we have many families that are able to cover all of their fees through one or both of these programs.
There will be a summer mini-camp for all players selected for SCS 2020-2021 teams. The exact dates of the camp are not yet available, however it will occur during an August weekend at Baierl Ice Complex and will consist of on-ice and off-ice sessions, nutrition guidance, and a fitness test for all players. The cost of this camp is included in the 2020 -2021 season fees.
