The following coaches are responsible for the continued growth of Steel City Selects Girls Hockey during the 2020-2021 season:
Jason Evans is will enter his fourth season with Steel City Selects in 2020-2021. His first three years resulted in MidAm District championships and bids to the USA Hockey National Tournament at the 14U level (twice) and the 16U level (once).
Prior to joining SCS, Evans served as head coach of Chatham University’s NCAA III Women’s Hockey program and their NCAA III Softball program. The program grew to be a competitive member of the ECAC-West conference and his efforts resulted in being a conference Coach of the Year finalists two years in a row. Coach Evans is active in local, regional and national girl’s hockey development including:
Evans was also the head coach for the Robert Morris University ACHA Division I men’s program from 2003-2010. His teams won four conference regular season titles, four conference playoff championships, and four trips to the ACHA National Championships. These also resulted in three conference Coach of the Year Awards.
Coach Evans has been a USA Hockey certified coach since 1998 when he started his coaching career as a high school head coach and later earned his Level 5 Certification at the 2004 coaching symposium in Grand Rapids, MI. He has also been a USA Hockey official since 2010.
Coach Jim Black will be entering his second season as the 19U head coach. Coach Black has over 25 years of coaching experience and is a long-time member of the SCS family. Having previoualy coached our 16U team and well as served off-the-ice as our Director of Coaching.
Coach Black has been Varsity Head Coach to four area high schools over the past 18 years, most recently at Pine Richland High School during 2016-2018. While head coach, his varsity teams won state championships in 2005, 2006 and 2013. Coach Black also has a wide-range of coaching experience at the Amateur level, from Mites to Midgets, including serving as head coach with the 16U AAA Phantoms, North Pittsburgh Wildcats 14U & 19U Girls Teams, as well as with Steel City Selects. He was also an Assistant Coach to the Pens Elite 19U Girls Tier I team which were District Champions in 2016.
Coach Black is USA Hockey Level 4 certified.
Paul Caswell is returning for his 5th season as a coach with Steel City Selects and 2nd year as head coach of the 14U team. He plans to build on the success of last season which included winning the MidAm District Championship and earning a spot at USA Hockey Nationals, finishing the season ranked 8th in the country. Coach Paul has been coaching for more than 10 years with two seasons as an assistant coach for Steel City’s 14U team and one season as an assistant for Steel City’s 16U team, all of which resulted in MidAm District Championships and bids to the USA Hockey National Championship.
In addition to his experience with SCS, Coach Paul has coached the past eight seasons with the Allegheny Hockey Association (AHA) in Delmont, PA where he has held both head and assistant coaching positions at the Mite, Squirt, and Pee Wee levels. Most notably he was the head coach of the Badger’s U12 girl’s team in 2013/14 that finished as a semi-finalist and the Pee Wee A Major Gold champion team in 2017/18. He has also helped form and coach both Learn to Play Hockey and Girls Hockey Start programs at AHA.
Coach Paul earned his USA Hockey Tier 4 Coaching Certification in 2017.
First earning his USA Hockey coaching certification in 2001, Jonathan has been certified at level 4 since 2015 and has more than 25 years of hockey experience overall. Jonathan has coached from developmental through Tier II, learn-to-play through 19U. He has been both an assistant and head coach at various age levels with the Mt. Lebanon Hornets, SHAHA and Steel City Selects organizations. Jonathan is a native Pittsburgher and former active duty Air Force officer who brings a background in leadership, organizational development and analytics. He is excited to help lead the Steel City Selects 12U program and grow the game.
