2022 - 2023 Season Coaches

The following coaches are responsible for the continued growth of Steel City Selects Girls Hockey during the 2021-2022 season:


19U Coach Jim BlackCoach Jim Black will be entering his fourth season as the 19U head coach.  In the 2021-2022 season, the 19U team won the MidAm District championship and earned a Gold medal at the USA Hockey National Championships. Coach Black  has over 25 years of coaching experience and is a long-time member of the SCS family.

Coach Black has been Varsity Head Coach to four area high schools over the past 18 years, most recently at Pine Richland High School during 2016-2018.  While head coach, his varsity teams won state championships in 2005, 2006 and 2013.  Coach Black also has a wide-range of coaching experience at the Amateur level, from Mites to Midgets, including serving as head coach with the 16U AAA Phantoms, North Pittsburgh Wildcats 14U & 19U Girls Teams, as well as with Steel City Selects.  He was also an Assistant Coach to the Pens Elite 19U Girls Tier I team which were District Champions in 2016.

Coach Black is USA Hockey Level 4 certified.


16U Coach Paul Caswell

Paul Caswell returns for his 7th season with Steel City Selects and 2nd season as the head coach of the 16U team. He followed up winning the Bronze medal at USA Hockey Nationals in 2021 by repeating as MidAM District Champions and USA Hockey Nationals Quarter-Finalist in 2022. Coach Paul earned his 100th win as an SCS Head Coach last season.

Coach Paul has been coaching hockey for more than 13 years.  His experience with Steel City Selects includes two seasons as an assistant coach and 2 years as a head coach for Steel City’s 14U team, one season as an assistant coach and 2 years as a head coach for Steel City’s 16U team. All of which resulted in MidAm District Championships and bids to the USA Hockey National Championship.

In addition to his experience with Steel City, he has coached for 9 seasons for the Allegheny Hockey Association in Delmont, PA.

Coach Paul earned his USA Hockey Level 4 Coaching Certification in 2017.


Coach Eddie PlastinoEddie was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada and played competitive hockey from his early ages right through his ‘retirement’. He began playing Tier I/AAA hockey at U8 and continued playing at that level until U18.  Eddie finished his competitive hockey career playing in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and the Metro Toronto Junior A Hockey League. 

Eddie has coached girls’ hockey in Canada and the United States for 8 years, most recently with the Tri-Valley Lady Blue Devils from Northern California. 

Eddie lives in Butler with his wife and three children. 


12U Coach Jonathan EdmondsFirst earning his USA Hockey coaching certification in 2001, Jonathan has been certified at level 4 since 2015 and has more than 25 years of hockey experience overall. Jonathan has coached from developmental through Tier II, learn-to-play through 19U. He has been both an assistant and head coach at various age levels with the Mt. Lebanon Hornets, SHAHA and Steel City Selects organizations. Jonathan is a native Pittsburgher and former active duty Air Force officer who brings a background in leadership, organizational development and analytics. He is excited to help lead the Steel City Selects 12U program and grow the game.
