The following coaches are responsible for the continued growth of Steel City Selects Girls Hockey during the 2019-2020 season:
Jason Evans is will enter his third season with Steel City Selects in the 2019-2020 season and his first with the National Bound 16U team. His first two years resulted in MidAm District championships and bids to the USA Hockey National Tournament at the 14U level.
Prior to joining SCS, Evans served as head coach of Chatham University’s NCAA III Women’s Hockey program and their NCAA III Softball program. The program grew to be a competitive member of the ECAC-West conference and his efforts resulted in being a conference Coach of the Year finalists two years in a row. Coach Evans is active in local, regional and national girl’s hockey development including:
Evans was also the head coach for the Robert Morris University ACHA Division I men’s program from 2003-2010. His teams won four conference regular season titles, four conference playoff championships, and four trips to the ACHA National Championships. These also resulted in three conference Coach of the Year Awards.
Coach Evans has been a USA Hockey certified coach since 1998 when he started his coaching career as a high school head coach and later earned his Level 5 Certification at the 2004 coaching symposium in Grand Rapids, MI. He has also been a USA Hockey official since 2010.
Coach Jim Black and his 25-years of coaching experience returns to the SCS ice for the 2019-2020 season as Head Coach of our 19U team. Coach Black is a long-time member of the SCS family, having most recently served off-the-ice as our Director of Coaching. He also previously coached the SCS 16U team.
Coach Black has been Varsity Head Coach to four area high schools over the past 18 years, most recently at Pine Richland High School during 2016-2018. While head coach, his varsity teams won state championships in 2005, 2006 and 2013. Coach Black also has a wide-range of coaching experience at the Amateur level, from Mites to Midgets, including serving as head coach with the 16U AAA Phantoms, North Pittsburgh Wildcats 14U & 19U Girls Teams, as well as with Steel City Selects. He was also an Assistant Coach to the Pens Elite 19U Girls Tier I team which were District Champions in 2016.
Coach Black is USA Hockey Level 4 certified.
Bill Allsopp will be joining the Steel City coaching staff as head coach of the girls 14U team. Bill has over 36 years of hockey experience as a player, coach and official. For the past two seasons, Bill has been an assistant coach for Steel City’s 14U National-Bound and 16U-Minor teams. Over the past five years, Bill has held a number of coaching positions at various age groups including coed, girls and girls development teams. Bill was an accomplished player in the Pittsburgh area playing on Bethel Park’s AAA High School Varsity team for four years where he was recognized as a two-time Post-Gazette Stellar 6 High School Hockey Athlete. In addition, Bill played competitive travel hockey since the 12U age level and has had the opportunity to play against some of the top amateur and junior players in the US, Canada, and Europe. Bill finished his playing career at Duquesne University where he was a four-year starter on the Men’s ACHA Division I club team while earning both a Bachelors in Arts and a Master’s degree in Business Administration. Bill’s coaching philosophy is to create a competitive, yet fun, environment, were every girl will continue to refine the necessary skills and hockey IQ to compete at the Tier I, II and NCAA levels.
Julie brings nearly 25 years of combined playing and coaching experience to SCS in her third season as the 12U head coach. She played four years of college ice hockey for Penn State and has most recently played ball hockey for the USA team at the World Ball Hockey Championships in 2015. Her coaching experience includes Varsity, JV, and Middle School for the Central Valley Warriors, Pittsburgh I.C.E., and the 19U North Pittsburgh Wildcats. She is also the administrator for the Beaver Badgers Hockey Start program.
