The following coaches are responsible for the continued growth of Steel City Selects Girls Hockey during the 2019-2020 season:
Jason Evans is will enter his third season with Steel City Selects in the 2019-2020 season and his first with the National Bound 16U team. His first two years resulted in MidAm District championships and bids to the USA Hockey National Tournament at the 14U level.
Prior to joining SCS, Evans served as head coach of Chatham University’s NCAA III Women’s Hockey program and their NCAA III Softball program. The program grew to be a competitive member of the ECAC-West conference and his efforts resulted in being a conference Coach of the Year finalists two years in a row. Coach Evans is active in local, regional and national girl’s hockey development including:
Evans was also the head coach for the Robert Morris University ACHA Division I men’s program from 2003-2010. His teams won four conference regular season titles, four conference playoff championships, and four trips to the ACHA National Championships. These also resulted in three conference Coach of the Year Awards.
Coach Evans has been a USA Hockey certified coach since 1998 when he started his coaching career as a high school head coach and later earned his Level 5 Certification at the 2004 coaching symposium in Grand Rapids, MI. He has also been a USA Hockey official since 2010.
Coach Jim Black and his 25-years of coaching experience returns to the SCS ice for the 2019-2020 season as Head Coach of our 19U team. Coach Black is a long-time member of the SCS family, having most recently served off-the-ice as our Director of Coaching. He also previously coached the SCS 16U team.
Coach Black has been Varsity Head Coach to four area high schools over the past 18 years, most recently at Pine Richland High School during 2016-2018. While head coach, his varsity teams won state championships in 2005, 2006 and 2013. Coach Black also has a wide-range of coaching experience at the Amateur level, from Mites to Midgets, including serving as head coach with the 16U AAA Phantoms, North Pittsburgh Wildcats 14U & 19U Girls Teams, as well as with Steel City Selects. He was also an Assistant Coach to the Pens Elite 19U Girls Tier I team which were District Champions in 2016.
Coach Black is USA Hockey Level 4 certified.
Paul Caswell will be returning for his 4th season as a coach at Steel City Selects. He has almost 10 years of coaching experience including two seasons as an assistant for Steel City’s 14U team and one season as an assistant for Steel City’s 16U team, all of which resulted in Mid Am District Championships and bids to the USA Hockey National Championship.
In addition to his experience with Steel City, he has coached for the past eight seasons at the Allegheny Hockey Association in Delmont, PA where he has held both head and assistant coaching positions at the Mite, Squirt, and Pee Wee levels. Most notably he was the head coach of the Badger’s 12U girls team in 2013/14 that finished as a semi-finalist and the Pee Wee A Major Gold champion team in 2017/18. He helped form and coach both Learn to Play Hockey and Girls Hockey Start programs at AHA.
Paul’s coaching philosophy is to create an atmosphere where the girls enjoy every minute that they are on the ice and at the rink. He believes in providing opportunities for the girls to refine their hockey skills and improve their overall hockey IQ to enable them to reach various goals such as playing at the Tier I level or continuing their playing careers at the NCAA or ACHA levels in college.
Paul earned his USA Hockey Tier 4 Coaching Certification in 2017.
Jon is joining SCS from the Armstrong Arrows and brings a rich history of both playing and coaching. During his early playing days, Jon played for the Armstrong Arrows, followed by five seasons with the Pittsburgh Stars, beginning at age 13. He also played high school hockey for both the Kittanning Arrows (which became Armstrong Central) and Avon Old Farms Prep School in Hartford, CT. He then went on to play college hockey at Sacred Heart University. His coaching experience include stints wit the International Hockey Training Center, the Johnstown Jr. Chiefs, Kittanning High School, and the Armstrong Arrows. Jon is excited to join SCS and share his passion for teaching the game he loves.
Julie brings 25 years of combined playing and coaching experience to SCS in her third season as an SCS head coach, having spent the past two seasons as the head coach of our 12U team. Julie played four years of college ice hockey for Penn State and has most recently played ball hockey for the USA team at the World Ball Hockey Championships in 2015. Her coaching experience includes Varsity, JV, and Middle School for the Central Valley Warriors, Pittsburgh I.C.E., and the 19U North Pittsburgh Wildcats. She is also the administrator for the Beaver Badgers Hockey Start program.
